The State Government has announced that Safeguarding Officers will be appointed in every Tasmanian Government school.
This is to help protect all children and young people in our care.
A Reference Group of school leaders has begun the planning for this work.
All children and young people have the right to an education, to be heard, and to be kept safe from harm.
Our schools must meet their safeguarding responsibilities under the National Child Safe Standards.
Safeguarding Officers will play an important role in this, spreading the message that Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.
They will also work with schools to help ensure that children are at the centre of decisions that affect them.
We are consulting with people in schools, including children and young people, to ensure these roles provide them with the support they need.
Every aspect of the role, including the title, is being carefully considered as part of this process.
