A girl in a wheelchair and a woman sitting next to her

Sophia is a Glenorchy Primary School student, who uses a wheelchair and communicates through an Eyegaze. She has shown incredible initiative and compassion through her enquiry project this year.

Her project, driven by the question “how can I help people?”, focused on supporting single mothers during the Christmas season.

After going down a few different paths, she decided to set up a company that sells bags, with all profits going to Hobart City Mission.

Wicked bags

Sophia has been very excited about the movie ‘Wicked’. Even before promotion kicked off, she was the first to tell all her friends about it. Every day during recess, she shares her knowledge about and passion for the movie with the school office staff in their ‘Wicked Club’.

Inspired by her love for the movie, she decided to produce Wicked bags. Together with the support of her Teacher Assistant (TA) Jasmine, she crafted the bags and ironed on the designs.

Despite her limited mobility, Sophia personally hand-signs each bag, adding a special touch.

Helping those in need

The bags have been a great success with staff and parents! After quickly selling out at the showcase of the enquiry projects, Sophia opened for pre-orders.

Through her efforts, Sophia raised $193. On her last day of primary school, she handed over the money to Hobart City Mission. This money will provide food, self-care packs, pet food, and presents for children, benefiting many single mothers and others in need.

Sophia’s dedication and creativity have made a significant impact, demonstrating that we all can make a difference in our community. Her story is a heartwarming reminder of the power of kindness and determination.
