Almost 60,000 students have walked through the gates of Tasmanian Government schools today, marking the start of another exciting school year.

A heartfelt welcome goes out to our newest students and their families, embarking on this exciting journey for the first time, as well as those returning for another year of learning, friendships, and personal growth.

This year is particularly special for the students attending our two newest schools in Brighton and Legana – offering world-class facilities to empower the next generation of Tasmanian students.

  • Legana Primary School: This $33.7 million facility boasts a range of impressive features, including an undercover basketball/netball court, a full-sized oval, a maker space with a floor-to-ceiling Lego wall, and a designated state-of-the-art library. It will also have an oral health clinic co-located on site, run by Tasmania Health Service, supporting students and the wider West Tamar community.
  • Brighton High School: With an investment of $74 million, this school offers modern learning facilities for up to 600 students in Years 7–12. Highlights include a commercial kitchen and café, a cutting-edge technology space, a multi-use indoor gymnasium, and a contemporary performing arts area.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff joined Brighton High School’s inaugural principal, Megan Bennell, to officially welcome students, while Education Minister Jo Palmer celebrated the milestone alongside Legana Primary’s inaugural principal, Liz O’Donahue.

With incredible new learning environments, passionate educators, and thousands of bright young minds ready to thrive, 2025 is shaping up to be a truly exciting year for Tasmanian education!
