Aboriginal Education Services supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners in schools and Child and Family Learning Centres.
We provide services to schools to enable:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to reach their learning potential.
- All learners to understand and value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures.

Visit The Orb – our award-winning, online multimedia resource
The Orb celebrates Tasmanian Aboriginal people and the interconnections between Country, culture, identity and Community.
The Orb features interviews with Tasmanian Aboriginal Community members. It provides teachers with Australian Curriculum aligned resources to assist the teaching of Tasmanian Aboriginal histories and cultures.
Learning Plans for Aboriginal Students and Torres Strait Islander Students
All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students will have a learning plan. This plan will:
- be developed in partnership with you as parents/carers, your child, and their teacher(s)
- identify specific goals for learning and may include a cultural goal.

The Aboriginal Education Library
Anyone can borrow from the Aboriginal Education Library!
Located at Aboriginal Education Services in Lindisfarne, it has resources on Tasmanian Aboriginal history and culture, Sea Country, Australian Curriculum subjects, creation stories and more. Teacher-Librarian Mary Blake will find resources for you (and will send them by parcel if you’re outside Hobart).

Scholarships for Aboriginal students
Alma Lily Stackhouse Scholarship – for students in Grade 11 and 12
This two-year scholarship honours Tasmanian Aboriginal Elder Aunty Alma Lily Stackhouse (1934-2005) and provides support for Aboriginal students from rural/remote areas.
The scholarship is awarded once every two years to a Tasmanian Aboriginal student in Year 10 to help them complete Years 11 and 12.
It covers:
- Materials
- Equipment
- Travel
- Other costs of living.
Alma Lily Stackhouse Scholarship has Guidelines and an application form. The next scholarship will be awarded for the 2025-2026 school years.
Lucy Beeton Aboriginal Teacher Scholarship
This scholarship honours Lucy Beeton (1829-1886) who was the first Tasmanian Aboriginal teacher. In 1871 she established a school on Badger Island. The scholarship provides financial incentive/support for Aboriginal people to undertake a teaching qualification at the University of Tasmania. More information, and an application form, are available from the University of Tasmania.
Applications for the Scholarship open in September and close at the end of October.
