Building Tasmania’s Future Workforce

Connecting schools, students and industry to strengthen pathways into high-demand careers.

  • Tourism & Hospitality
  • Agriculture
  • Health & Community Services

The Youth Career Facilitator (YCF) Program strengthens connections between schools, students and industry. These connections help to build a skilled, job-ready workforce for Tasmania.

Operating across Tasmania, the program:

  • helps local businesses engage with students in Years 9–12

Vocational learning can include:

  • Work-based Learning (WbL) – Gaining experience in workplaces.
  • Vocational Education and Training (VET) – Studying nationally accredited and industry endorsed skills.
  • Apprenticeships & Traineeships – Learning on the job while earning wages and working toward a national trade qualification.
  • Industry Engagement – Meeting employers, visiting workplaces and working with mentors.

Key Industries

The YCF program focuses on connecting students with opportunities in priority industries. Priority industries are those where Tasmanian businesses are actively looking for future workers. These include:

  • Construction & Architecture
  • Tourism & Hospitality
  • Health & Community Services
  • Agriculture
  • Manufacturing
  • Early Childhood Education & Care

Industry mix varies by region. Your local facilitator will work with you to identify the most relevant opportunities in your area.

Why this matters for your business

Tasmania’s businesses need a pipeline of skilled, work-ready young people. The YCF program makes it easier for you to build that pipeline – at no cost.

By engaging with motivated students early, you can:

  • build awareness of your industry and attract motivated young workers
  • reduce future recruitment and training costs
  • help shape the skills students develop, ensuring they’re work-ready
  • develop a pipeline of skilled workers suited to your business needs
  • build relationships with schools and training providers to shape VET pathways that align with your industry.

How it works

It’s free

  • The YCF works with businesses and schools to arrange pathways, work placements, training and career opportunities at no cost to either party.

It’s flexible

  • Businesses can participate in a range of ways, from short-term engagements like guest speaking to long-term commitments like hosting apprentices.

It’s a partnership

  • We provide guidance and coordination to ensure businesses, students and schools get the most out of their collaboration. We adapt based on your feedback.

Ways to get involved

Whether you have five minutes or five hours to offer, there is a way to get involved that suits you:

  • showcase your industry: host a school visit or invite students on-site
  • share your expertise: send an employee to speak at a local school careers event
  • support skill development: partner with VET teachers to bring industry knowledge into classrooms
  • offer short-term work-based learning: trial students in real work settings
  • develop learning resources and help shape what young people learn about your industry
  • consider an apprentice or trainee: get support to train a young worker in the skills you need.

Small efforts now can create a stronger, more skilled workforce for the future. Let’s work together.
