FAQs about training expectations

Are there age restrictions for DECYP’s Safeguarding Training?

DECYP workers aged 18 years or over are required to undertake Safeguarding Training.

Young people wishing to learn more about child abuse and available supports can visit the Tasmanian Government’s Tell Someone website.

Do external organisations that schools visit on excursions need to do DECYP’s Safeguarding Training?

No. Employees at external sites being visited by DECYP groups – such as school, Launch into Learning (LiL), Early Childhood Inclusion Service (ECIS), or Child and Family Learning Centre (CFLC) excursions – do not need to complete DECYP Safeguarding Training.

However, all DECYP employees and volunteers helping with excursions are required to complete DECYP’s Safeguarding Training and hold a current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP)

Parents/caregivers participating in CFLC, LiL or ECIS excursions/events with their own children do not need to complete the training.

Refer to the Off-Campus Activities Planning Procedure for further information.

Do bus drivers need to complete the Safeguarding Training?

Yes – if they are bus drivers contracted by DECYP (such as a school or CFLC), or where the bus is owned by DECYP.

For other types of bus drivers – determining whether a driver should undertake the Safeguarding Training should be considered during excursion/event risk assessment. For example, if a trip is fully supervised by a DECYP employee, with no breaks and the driver is not with the children on their own – they would not need to complete the training. If it’s a longer trip, with breaks, and the driver has more opportunities to interact with the children – they would need to undertake Safeguarding Training.

Do canteen volunteers need to complete the Safeguarding Training?

Yes. All DECYP volunteers, including canteen volunteers, are required to complete the Safeguarding Training and hold a current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) before they engage with children and young people.

Do external work placement students need to complete the Safeguarding Training?

Yes. Work placement students 18 years or over, such as university students studying education, social work, psychology, and speech pathology, doing placement with DECYP are required to complete Safeguarding Training and hold a current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) before they engage with children and young people.

If they are completing their studies with the University of Tasmania, they will complete the training at the commencement of the year as part of the compliance requirements for professional experience placements.

Do sporting organisations need to complete the Safeguarding Training?

Yes. Where sporting organisations are visiting a DECYP site (such as in schools, CFLCs), for a Physical Education lesson or similar, they are required to complete Safeguarding Training and hold a current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) before they engage with children and young people.

However, if children and young people are travelling offsite to visit a sporting organisation, workers engaged by that organisation do not have to do the Safeguarding Training (noting that DECYP’s Off-Campus Activities Planning Procedure requirements must be followed by DECYP workers arranging the visit).

Do parents/caregivers attending DECYP sites (schools or CFLCs) to participate in early years programs with their child/children, need to complete the Safeguarding Training?

No, parents/caregivers attending a CFLC, LiL session, ECIS or Libraries Tasmania program with their child/children are not required to complete Safeguarding Training.

Parents/caregivers attending a CFLC without their child to participate in a program for parents/caregivers (such as ‘Being A Parent’) or to seek support from CFLC employees do not need to complete the Safeguarding Training.

However, all visitors to DECYP sites should be supervised by DECYP employees.

Do parents/caregivers undertaking re-entry meetings for their child need to complete the Safeguarding Training?

No. Parents/caregivers attending a re-entry meeting are not required to complete the training.

However, all visitors to DECYP sites should be supervised by DECYP employees.

Do parents/caregivers accompanying their child in the classroom for part of the day to support their child to transition into the school environment need to complete the Safeguarding Training?

No. Parents/caregivers who support/work with their own child/children are not required to complete the Safeguarding Training.

However, all visitors to DECYP sites should be supervised by DECYP employees.

Do parents/caregivers that attend school events (e.g., athletics carnivals) need to complete the Safeguarding Training?

No. Parents/caregivers who attend school events (such as athletics carnivals, assemblies, drama productions) to watch their child/children participate do not need to complete the training.

However, all visitors to DECYP sites should be supervised by DECYP employees.

If parents/caregivers will be volunteering in any capacity, they are required to complete Safeguarding Training and hold current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) before they engage with children and young people.

Do people that visit DECYP sites to present to a group (e.g., at an assembly) need to complete the Safeguarding Training?

No. Individuals presenting to students, children and families, for example on behalf of organisations, are not required to complete the training.

However, these visitors to DECYP sites require supervision by DECYP employees.

Will DECYP accept certificates from other Safeguarding Training?

All employees and relief staff MUST complete the DECYP Mandatory Reporting Training and Child Sexual Abuse Awareness Training each year. No other training participation will be accepted.

For other workers – DECYP will recognise participation of Safeguarding Training (in that year) from:

  • the Tasmanian Department of Health (DOH)/Tasmanian Health Service (THS), or
  • Australian Childhood Foundation (ACF).

Workers seeking to have their prior training recognised should provide their completion certificate/s to their manager/DECYP contact officer. However, these workers are also encouraged to undertake DECYP’s training.

Do DECYP employees visiting multiple DECYP sites need to provide their certificates at each site?

No. It is the responsibility of each DECYP manager to ensure their employees have completed the training. If a DECYP employee from another site is visiting your site for something such as a meeting with a student (e.g., Professional Support Staff; Child Safety Officer etc); to undertake an audit; to attend a meeting or to check IT equipment, they do not need to show their certificates.

FAQs about training expectations for relief staff

What are the training expectations for relief staff?

All DECYP relief staff must complete the following employee Safeguarding Training each year:

  • Child Sexual Abuse Awareness Training; and
  • Mandatory Reporting Training

Alongside this training, you will also be required to acknowledge that you have read and understood the DECYP Conduct and Behaviour Policy and Conduct Standards.

The modules will provide you with practical information about how to safeguard children and young people from harm, including when and how to report concerns and information about child abuse.

Each module takes about 30 minutes to complete.

You must complete the training before you work with children and young people.

Once you have completed the training, you must provide your completion certificates to your DECYP contact officer/Manager (such as Principal, Centre Leader), alongside any other pre-employment checks like Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP).

From 2025, your completion certificates are valid until the beginning of 2026.

I’m having trouble accessing the modules – what should I do?

You can access the Safeguarding Training modules for relief staff from 28 January. Links will be available at the top of this webpage.

You no longer need to wait to have an DECYP account set up prior to completing the modules.
