Course description

The Department for Education, Children and Young People is committed to supporting our principals by equipping them with essential foundational leadership and management capabilities

The new essential requirement supports candidates to meet accountabilities regarding department policies, processes and procedures associated with the role of school-based principals.

Modules are delivered across four key learning areas:

  • Teaching and learning
  • Human, financial and facilities resource management
  • Engaging and working with the community
  • Student and staff wellbeing for learning

The modules are designed as self-paced online learning accessed via the Departments learning management system.

It will take approximately 25 hours to complete the 17 modules sitting across the 4 learning areas.

Program outcomes

All candidates who seek to be appointed to the classification of school-based principal are required to complete the School Leadership and Management Prerequisite (SLMP) online modules prior to appointment and the commencement of employment from January 2025.

Merit-based recruitment and selection will apply for all school based principal vacancies.

Candidates who complete some or all the School Leadership and Management Prerequisites modules are under no obligation to apply for a principal role.
